Insomnias: varied, unpleasant, dangerous
Insomnia is a disease when a
person cannot have enough amount of sleeping, or it's not satisfying.
If insomnia lasts for several days, it is acute and usually doesn't
need special treatment. But if it becomes regulars and happens every
week, it's better to visit a doctor. Chronic problem influences badly
physical functions, slows reactions, thinking, ability to
concentrate.
The study of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine showed that 75% of Americans suffer from acute insomnias. 6% of them face developed chronic insomnia later. MD Ron Grunstein mentions that insomnia is diagnosed if a person has problems with sleeping during at least one month. But it doesn't mean, that if it is going less time, a person should just suffer and be patient. If it is a real disturbance, consultation and treatment are needed immediately.
Insomnia may be accorded by symptoms like hallucinations, then a person is half-asleep and anxiety or lousy mood before going to bed. If a person wakes up several times at night or gets up early in the morning, though didn't have enough rest and still have time for sleeping, that is also insomnia.
It happens for multiple reasons. For example, too intense work, stress, depression, and other psychiatric disorders, wrong habits and diet. If a person used not only to sleep in the bed but also eat, work, watch TV and surf the Internet there, this creates wrong associations with a bed.
Treatment
If the problem is caused by trauma, psychotherapy is needed. Although for good repair darkness is necessary, after injury a person may have a fear of the dark. I such case some light is better. And also sometimes traumatized people feel better if they have a friend or a family member in the same bedroom. After a trauma a person generally needs more sleeping to rest cause body repairs itself during sleeping, and psycho decrease the tension through dreams (even if people forget them after getting up).
If the reason is only a wrong schedule and habits which interfere for healthy sleeping, behavioral therapy is needed. If it caused by the disorder, then medicine is used.
Some people are so tensed during the day that even at the nighttime they have problems with relaxation. So they should learn how to relax. Darkness is essential to feel the rest. Even slight light (from a computer, for example) may be a severe obstacle to obtain full benefit from sleeping. If it is impossible to avoid the light, then blindfold is recommended. To protect eyes from the bright outside light thick curtains are useful.
Bright light or active job and sport before going to bed is a disturbance. So it's better to restrict this things an hour before sleeping. And yes, surfing the Internet by a smartphone also may stimulate the brain. Caffeine and alcohol usually cause problems, although some people report they can drink a cup of coffee and sleep like a baby after that.
If insomnia is caused by drugs, it should be discussed with a doctor who prescribed that drug. Maybe she will switch It or reduce the dosage. Usually, possible problems with sleeping are mentioned in the “side-effects” section in the description of the medicine. If they are not said, it's unlikely that insomnia caused by drugs. But still, it's better to consult a doctor.
Some people are so afraid to be sleepless that this fear becomes an obstacle to sleep. To lower this fear doctors recommend getting up if a person cannot fall asleep for twenty minutes and to do some moderate activities. And then desire to go to sleep become more persistent, come back to the bed again.
There is a question if drugs against insomnias are safe. It depends on the medicine. More contemporary cause addiction rarely. But most of them make person sleepy and inattentive if they are taken before the job, education, car driving and other activities which demand attention. So doctors recommend using other methods before medicine if it is possible. Also, the dose varies in influence. Some of them give a strong effect, and others slight. Not necessarily medicine is chemical. Sometimes they are made of natural components.
